Think of the average film or photo production. Even simple shoots and clips involve scripts and sets, direction, design and post-production magic – plus plenty of back-and-forth between the involved brands, ad agencies, production companies, agents, actors and models.
One aspect of this process often gets sidelined: copyright clearance or so-called buyouts. These are royalties owed to featured artists – from musician and model to (voice) actor and writer – for publication across different media (TV, print, internet etc.), timescales and geographic regions.
Before these copyrights are cleared and paid, not a single ad sees the light of day – and you can forget about that set-in-stone release date.
What makes copyrights so complicated?
Not only are there plenty of parameters, but each step requires negotiation – possibly with different contacts and across several time zones.
At the same time, everyone uses their own method, paperwork and software to muddle through this tricky minefield. Contracts get lost (or renewed for no reason), artists sue for payment, markets miss out. Without a unified set of rules or a one-stop clearance platform, it is easy to lose track of it all – and even some of your vital records.
